People in the 10th district are well aware of the beauty of nature and the outdoors. We have some of the loveliest spaces in the country here, and I want to make sure they are protected so future generations can enjoy them too.
It's depressing to think how long we've been warned about the coming effects of climate change. Those effects are becoming more and more severe, from wildfires to hurricanes to drought to heat waves. My campaign slogan is, "Let's Get Things Done," and I vow to start addressing these issues and stop postponing them.
We all know the biggest driver of climate change is the carbon we are pumping into the atmosphere from power plants and cars. So what's the solution? The answer is we need to transition away from fossil fuels and into renewables, but the transition won't happen overnight. We can continue to grow our green energy sector while making sure oil and gas production stays as clean and efficient as possible. We can continue to encourage car companies to improve gas mileage, and bring more hybrids and electric cars to market. And we should look into nuclear power as well, because new innovations have made it far safer than before.
Global forest coverage has been decimated in recent years. I support funding to launch a massive reforestation program to help counteract global carbon emissions, as well as aid to other countries in forestry management, which can maximize the amount of carbon removed from the air. The United States has some of the most advanced forestry experts and our forests absorb over 10% of our emissions. We can help other countries do the same.
